Lanterns have been a popular method of lighting for centuries. The earliest examples were “glazed” with thin sheets of horn to protect the candle from draughts and wind, in England they were known as “lanthornes”. The hanging lantern as we know it today gained popularity in the 18th century, when they were glazed with glass and became more ornate whilst retaining their practical advantages over light fittings with exposed candles.
